H.E. Mohamed Issa Hamad ABUSHAHABAmbassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Kingdom of Belgium
H.E. Mohamed ABUSHAHAB took up the position of UAE Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium in January 2017. Prior to this, he was the Director of Policy Planning in the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, where he led a department that reports to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and provides briefing, analysis and advice on UAE foreign policy issues.
Between July 2012 and June 2013, he was also Acting Director of the Department of American & Pacific Affairs. In this capacity, he managed the bilateral relations between the UAE and countries in North, Central and South America.
Prior to that, he headed the International Climate Change Division within the Directorate of Energy & Climate Change where he led a number of delegations to the UNFCCC’s climate change negotiations, managed the UAE’s engagement in the Clean Energy Ministerial, and represented the UAE in the G-20 Clean Energy & Energy Efficiency Working Group.
H.E. Mohamed ABUSHAHAB previously spent 5 years at the Permanent Mission of the UAE to the United Nations in New York. Among his responsibilities during this period were the representation of the UAE on the Second Committee, which dealt with economic, financial, development, energy, and climate change issues, and the First Committee, which dealt with disarmament and international security issues.
H.E. Mohamed ABUSHAHAB received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the American University in Washington, D.C. He is married to Mrs. Amna ALMUHAIRY who is currently the Director of the Human Rights Department at the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation and also served at the Permanent Mission of the UAE to the UN. They have two sons and one daughter.
